Sourcing high quality tallow skincare
Buyer beware: How to Find Genuine Tallow Products
While a lot of new grassroots tallow companies coming on the market are absolutely fantastic, some of them, especially on Amazon, are selling imported stuff from unknown sources or even pushing knockoffs and hijacking other brands' listings. Even if you see a company on Amazon claiming to be a "Canadian brand" take a closer look at the seller to make sure that they pass the smell check. When it comes to tallow cosmetics, the truth is Amazon has become saturated with overseas imports and counterfeit products.
What to look for in high quality tallow?
See if the brand has its own website, social media and information about the founders. On Amazon, you can often look into the seller's details to see if they are shipping from your country or abroad. You can also look at their company registration information to see where they're based.
It's great to have other people in the space doing genuine artisanal production, but you can see a lot of knockoffs and cheap imports coming in from China, flooding the Amazon market with cheap product. I'm sure you can get good tallow products in other countries, but a few concerns about what's going on in this space have to do with misleading marketing and quality control. Some sellers market products as if they are locally crafted, small batch products, when in fact they're mass produced and shipped in from overseas. Moreover, when cheap products are shipped in from overseas, it raises questions about what is actually in these products. Grass fed beef tallow is a premium product that is more expensive than grain fed tallow, even in North America.
Quality control: cutting through the fat
When you see cheap tallow products for sale, claiming to be grass fed and Canadian, ask yourself how a company can afford to sell the products under market value without compromising on quality. Search for the brand's website and social media channels. Do they show people making the products? Are they using real or AI images and videos? Do they have authentic reviews or only affiliate marketers who earn a commission from affiliate codes? Do they reply to messages if you ask them about where their products are made?
Supporting local businesses: sourcing matters
If you're looking for high quality products and you want to support a Canadian and local business, take a look at where brands source their ingredients and make their products, even if they claim to be a "Canadian brand."
Lipidology is our tallow brand. We produce our products in-house using Canadian tallow. We have a trademark and we are the only ones selling Lipidology on Amazon under the seller name Quality Organics.
Examples from Alibaba
Below are some screenshots of cheap tallow products that can be sourced from China. Sellers can put anything they want on the packaging and have it shipped from China to North America for sale on Amazon and other marketplaces. Some sellers on Amazon use this approach and still claim to be a "Canadian brand" or even create knockoffs of genuine Canadian and US brands.
